Provision of Sri Lanka Government Owned Weapons and Associated Equipment with Sri Lankan Sea Marshals
Weapons owned by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) are available for hire by Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) on per-transit basis. Weapons are accompanied by a Sri Lankan sea marshal at all times. Additional sea marshals and team leaders are available at request. All weapons, associated equipment and sea marshals are provided on authorization by the Ministry of Defence.
Weapons and Equipment
A kit consists of the following;
The number of weapons and other equipment provided depends on the number of sea marshals in the team.
Sea Marshals
All sea marshals are ex-military personnel with an experience of 12 years or more in the Sri Lankan armed forces. All have successfully completed training complying to Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) for Seafarers and have valid seaman books.
It is a mandatory requirement of the Ministry of Defence that at least one Sri Lankan sea marshal accompanies weapons as a custodian from the time they are issued until returned to an approved storage facility. Custodians can be used as a security team member.
PMSCs can hire a full team of Sri Lankans inclusive of a Team Leader and two or three sea marshals, or use Sri Lankans in combination with PMSCs team leaders and/or sea marshals.
